How to Pick Your Perfect Eyebrow Shape

Your eyebrow shape has the power to transform your face. Choose the right shape for your brows and you’ll look stunning. The wrong shape? Well, let’s not go there. Find out how to select your perfect eyebrow shape today.

Choosing your perfect eyebrow shape isn’t terribly challenging. You just need to follow a few principles, and you’ll have stunning brows worthy of attention. The problem comes when people select a brow shape based upon their preference, rather than what would suit their face.

Today the principles I’m sharing on how to select your brow shape, apply to both manual brow plucking and cosmetic tattooing of a brow. Of course, when you visit our Dunedin beauty salon, I’m here to help you make the best decision too.

Choosing Your Best Eyebrow Shape

Before you can decide on the right brow shape, you first need to know the basic brow shape terminology. They are:

  • Arch height – the lift of the arch shape from the bottom of the eyebrow
  • Arch shape – how pointed the peak of the arch is – round, soft or hard angled
  • Thickness – brow thickness – thick, medium, thin
  • Definition – the volume of the brow – soft or full
  • Length – how far the brow extends – extended tail, normal tail or short tail

Your next step is to decide your face shape. There are six face shapes, each with their own unique characteristics:

  • 1. Oval – your forehead is wider than your chin. You have prominent cheekbones and your face tapers to a narrow chin.
  • 2. Round – your face’s widest part is your cheeks, and your face is almost as wide as it is long.
  • 3. Long – your forehead, cheekbones and jawlines are approximately the same width. Your face tapers to a narrow oval chin.
  • 4. Square – your forehead, cheekbones and jawlines are approximately the same width. Your jawline is squared and very obvious.
  • 5. Heart – your forehead is wider than your chin. You have prominent cheekbones and your face tapers towards a point.
  • 6. Diamond – your face is highly angular, with a short forehead and is widest at the temples.

If looking at your face doesn’t help you find your face shape (and with most of us it doesn’t), then you can:

  • Measure your face length
  • Divide the total length by three
  • Measure how long it is from the bottom of your nose to the bottom of your chin

You have a long face if the last number is bigger than the first, a round face if the last number is smaller than the first, and an oval face is the first and last numbers are the same.

Now you know your face shape, your eyebrow shape is easier to choose. They are:

  • Oval face – a lower arch with a soft brow
  • Diamond face – a soft brow, with a curved arch
  • Round face – a high arch with a soft or hard angled arch shape
  • Square face – full brows with a soft or high angled arch
  • Heart face – soft brow with a curved low height arch
  • Long face – a shallow arch with extended tails
